I grew up in a Christian home in Iowa and was raised on a farm. After high school I went to college in WI and graduated with a major in youth ministries. It was there that I met my beautiful wife, Katie and shortly after college we were married. After Bible college we moved out to Virginia Beach, VA where I enrolled in a Master of Divinity program and Katie in a Master of Business Administration. While attending graduate school we both worked full-time. I worked in tissue and organ transplant and Katie in retail credit for a financial institution. Shortly after completing our degrees we had our first child. We now have three children: Gentry, Creed and Mari.
As a family we enjoy traveling, chilling at the beach (we lived by the beach for 9 years while in VA Beach), roller coasters, hanging out with friends and eating great food! I love the outdoors particularly waterfowl hunting, Chicago sports teams, smoking meat, fresh Iowa sweet corn, theology, music and a good cup of coffee. Katie enjoys cooking, healthy eating, and being a mom to three kids (she’s a fantastic mother and an amazing wife)!
Favorite Bible Passage: Exodus 34:6-7 – “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.”
Favorite Book/Author: Wow, too many to list so I’ll limit my selection to three! Kevin Vanhoozer’s “The Drama of Doctrine”, Gehard Forde’s “On Being a Theologian of the Cross” and Graeme Goldsworthy’s “According to Plan.”
Favorite Restaurant/Food: I love sushi, seafood and smoked meat. I love to visit local restaurants and “hole-in-the-wall” joints.
Pastor of Worship and Youth
I was born in Illinois, where my family planted churches. I attended Boyce College (The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) in Louisville, Kentucky to study Pastoral Counseling and Worship Ministry. It was there that I met my beautiful wife, Mary Kate, who was studying Biblical Counseling. I spent two years as the Worship Leader at Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville. Mary Kate and I felt God calling us to start our life in ministry together at Lakeside and are excited to make disciples in Worthington.
Mary Kate and I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to concerts, playing board games, drinking coffee and reading together. I recently learned how to fish and enjoy spending time outside. We love having people over and dream about having the house that everyone just walks into without knocking.
Favorite Bible Passage: Psalm 103:11-13, “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his faithful love toward those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far as he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”
Favorite Book/Author: There are way to many to list them all, so I’ll give you categories. Theology: Recalling the Hope of Glory by Allen Ross. Fiction: Harry Potter series. Ministry: Rhythms of Grace by Mike Cosper and Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp.
Favorite Food: Nothing beats good pizza.
Children’s Ministry Director
I grew up in Worthington area and married my high school sweetheart, Jeff. We have two girls, Brenda Oberloh and Tammi Landers. I have four grandchildren whom I adore. I love this little city of beautiful parks, great festivals and diversity. I am proud to be from this community and believe that there is a lot of potential here for our church and the building of God’s Kingdom. I have worked at Lakeside Church as the Children’s Ministry Director since 2010, but I’ve attended church here since 1995. I attended college for Early Childhood Education and I worked with the Head Start program as a teacher, administrator and bus driver in California and here in Worthington. I have always been drawn to children and love working with them. I love to travel, watch a great love story and I love, love a great cup of coffee. The world is changing quickly and kids need all of us to love, care and guide them. I believe there is an “urgency” to heed the Lord’s calling and gather in the harvest.
Favorite Bible Passage: A favorite verse of mine is found in Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” This Bible verse is important to me because I know that God is guiding my path and will help me to stay in His Light.
I was born and raised in Fairmont, Minnesota and met and married my husband, also from Fairmont in 1980. It has been my privilege to work and serve at Lakeside Church since moving to Worthington in 1981. This has been where we raised our three children, Lindsay, Andrew, and Alex. Lindsay, husband, Brad, and children, Ella, Cason, and Adalyn live in Elk River, Minnesota. Our son Andrew lives and works in the Twin Cities. Alex is living and working in South Korea teaching at an English school for the past few years.
I love serving the Lord in many ways through singing on worship team, helping with various ministries, and working in the office at Lakeside. I love to read, cook, go on walks, travel and my new love is being a grandmother. My husband and I love to spend time with our family and together with our dog Sam.
Favorite Bible Passage: One of my favorites is 2 Corinthians 12:9 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
Favorite Book/Author: I love to read books and some of my recent favorites are “The Best Yes” by Lysa Terkeurst, and “A Severe Mercy” by Shelden Vanauken. I am currently reading “Surprised by Joy” by C.S. Lewis and “The Songs of Jesus” by Tim Kellar.
Favorite Restaurant/Food: One of my favorite things to do with my husband is eat out and try new foods. I have become quite a “foodie” and like trying to cook different types of food and lately more healthy foods. One new favorite restaurant is called “Redstone” that has a nice atmosphere and great food.
Favorite Vacations: My favorite places to travel have been Mexico, Paraguay, Germany, and recently South Korea to visit our son.
Kelli Garbers joined the Lakeside staff in April 2016 and serves in the main office at Lakeside. Much of what you see on the screen Sunday morning is from her hard work. Kelli takes care of the preparation and printing of the bulletin, inserts, and preparing and sending our e-communication [email protected] among other things. Kelli and her husband Jason along with 3 of their 4 children moved to Worthington in the fall of 2015 from Columbus, Nebraska. Lakeside became their home church quickly after they arrived. Stop by and say hello today!
I was born in El Salvador, Central America. At the age of 20, I moved to Orange County California where I became a mother of my 2 boys Evan & Liam. While there I searched for what God had prepared for me. Instead of getting closer to Him I got very far away. My stubbornness, doubts and insecurity brought me to Worthington, MN where I needed to start my life over again with my boys.
By the grace of God, He led me to Lakeside Church in 2014. God also gave me my beautiful husband Bryan and his 3 kids Jalen, Justyce and Jaxon. I became a Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and am now working as a Territory Sales Manager/Coach for Sanford Profile.
In 2015 the opportunity to take care of Lakeside Church became available. With the Lords guidance, I accepted the responsibility. It has been an amazing experience! God has led me down a more humble path where my relationship with Him has been revived & is deeper than ever now. I cannot wait to see what God has prepared for me in His ministry!
